This is not a hiking book. Rather it covers topics ranging from Shenandoah's history and geology to Shenandoah's wildlife, plant life, weather and more. The text is easy to read and the photos included are spectacular. This book is a must-have for anyone who wants to know a little bit of everything about Shenandoah National Park!

This book is one of the Farthing Wood series and is the fourth book. This is the fourth book and is not the best one but is quite good and it does leave you guessing about the storyline. This one is about a mysterious hunter whichis attacking the creatures of the park but they do not know what the hunter is so they set up a guards who are Tawny Owl an Whisteler. Will the animals find out what the hunter is and what it wants.

We took several guide books with us when we took the Great American Vacation last year, but this was the one we returned to again and again. The sections on each park were big enough to give you plenty of ideas for things to do during a 3-4 day visit, but not so big as to be overwhelming. It has a nice introductory section for each park, a list of hikes of various difficulties, good maps and beautiful pictures. You won't need a separate guide for each park if you have this book.

I have read and used many guide books and this one is one of the best, if not the best, concerning all species of trees found in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It's extremely well done, and I would recommend it to any student of natural history, forestry, or botany no matter their level of academics.

My son could spend hours on this. This CD is educational, fun, and entertaining. The user has to create a park anywhere in the country and balance, name, and create a park that balances all the plants, animals, people, etc. It was a great investment. Wish they would make more of these CDs for kids. Parents would love it too.

In his first book, Mr. Kalt tells the fascinating story of the struggle for the creation of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It is rich with relevant comments, quotations and pictures from letters, newspaper articles and files of critical players in the drama. The book is a reflection of life from a tumultuous time in United States history which clearly shows the dichotomies that exist in every community. A must read for those interested in the history and culture of the area!

Ms. Masciola Walsh has presented us with a winning proposition. She has introduced us to a series which promises a wealth of information that we "common folk" can use to broaden our "star horizons" and truly bring the sky down to Earth. This beatifully crafted, concisely written work introduces us not only to the fun art of "star hopping", but also to the rich countryside, delicate geography, and impressive views of Olympic National Park. This, the first in the series, tells us in very understandable terms how to find our way around the night sky with little effort and literally no financial investment. It also guides us through the best places on the Olympic Penninsula to do so. I can't wait for her to do her Guide to the Great Lakes version. I'll be out there with my red light, my planesphere and her easy to read star charts, having some of the best times of my life. A highly recommended starting book for anyone who's ever thought about the vastness of our universe, and wanted to take a good look at it. Better yet, it's done through the eyes of a poet.

I lament profoundly that this book is no longer in press, and that many people of the scientific community doesn't know it. Written in the sixties by such important authors as D.E. Parks, M.S. Nelkin, J.R. Beyster and N.F. Wikner, who worked together at General Atomic, this book shows the foundations of modern neutron scattering formalism by its own founders. In this book the reader will find clarifiying discussions that seldom appear in modern literature. I am one of the few lucky readers to have a copy of it.

In lower Manhattan, one will find Duane Park Cafe. This happy little book contains nothing but recipes for sorbets (which must be made in an ice cream machine) and granitas (which can be made in a home freezer) from this cafe. I have never been there, but I am glad to have their recipes for these icy, fruity, delightful treats (especially the coffee/chocolate one).

Basically, these things are nothing more than fruit juice/puree, sugar, ice, and maybe a bit of flavoring (liqueur, vanilla, etc.). They have no fat, although they are rather caloric due to the sugar.

There are 15 sorbet recipes, 14 for granitas, 11 for matching sauces, 10 for matching cookies, and 3 garnishes. It is a classic example of single subject cookbook that covers its subject extremely well; it is quite unique, as I do not know of another one that is exclusively devoted this subject.

The granita and sauce recipes I tried were all very good. I cannot tell you about sorbet, because I do not have an ice cream machine. Some of the granitas are a little too sweet for me, so I had to cut back the sugar a couple of times. The section that reviews ice cream machines is too brief. The sabayon recipes are not the traditional, but ones containing whipped cream; they are rich and delicious, but also very high in calories and fat. One of author's names is misspelled on page 9.

This book is the facintaing story of the birth of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Set at the turn of the last century it charts the epic struggle of how one man changed the hearts of a nation which had hitherto treated wild animals only for sport.

The regular encounters with lions and other wild animals add extra excitement. This book must be read by anyone who has an interest in conservation or african wildlife.
